In his Dallas debut, Klay Thompson set a franchise record, sinking six three-pointers and scoring 22 points alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Thursday night’s 120-109 win over the San Antonio Spurs marked a promising start for the Mavericks' new trio.

Reflecting on his nerves, Thompson admitted, "It’s just one game in October, but it feels good to get the first one out of the way." After a tough finale with the Warriors last season—missing all ten shots in their play-in loss—Thompson’s Dallas debut showed his resilience. He began with two mid-range makes but missed his next four, before warming up from three in the second half.

Thompson posted 14 points after the break, hitting 4 of 5 from long range as Dallas surged, making 13 of 21 threes in the second half. He also added seven rebounds and three steals. A lighthearted exchange with former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo seemed to spark him: Thompson found himself so open on a three-point attempt, he paused, dribbled, then lined up the shot—a move he’s occasionally pulled off throughout his career.

"It’s funny when you’re that wide open—you can overthink it," Thompson shared. “I heard Luka running down the floor, so I’m glad I made it, and didn’t make him look silly."

Thompson also assisted Irving on a smooth handoff play, leaving a strong impression on Doncic, who noted, "He makes things so much easier for all of us. It’s great.”

In a game that was much more than just a debut, Thompson showed how seamlessly he could gel with Dallas’ top stars, hinting at an exciting season ahead.
